Don't forget that Facebook's deadline for switching business pages to the new Timeline layout is this Saturday, March 31. Businesses will need a new, larger horizontal cover graphic to appear at the top of their Timeline, which provides a unique visual impression when people visit their page. A study conducted by Simply Measured and published on Mashable today, reveals that “brands are getting an average of 46% more engagement with Timeline.” For help increasing brand page engagement for your business, contact Ashley Martin at 456-5576 x119 or info@klundthosmer.com so that we can talk with you about your Facebook business page goals and needs. Not only can we help you design the perfect cover graphic to reflect your brand and that meets Facebook's guidelines, we can help you strategize your business’ overall approach to using Facebook as a customer engagement tool.

To see an example of how the new layout looks, check out Klündt | Hosmer’s Timeline and don’t forget to “like” us while you’re there!

There’s a new skin spa in town with a philosophy that combines the very best of nature with modern science to achieve visible results. This philosophy is conveyed in a beautiful visual brand and website Klündt | Hosmer recently created. Esthetician, Deanna Magar, with over 16 years of experience, chose us to help her after moving to Spokane from Las Vegas a few months ago.

After her successful open house on March 16, Pure Skin Spa is officially open for business. Services include customized facials, microdermabrasion, microcurrent, LED light therapy, oxygen therapy, chemical peels and waxing. Along with these services, Pure Skin Spa offers product lines such as iS CLINICAL, OmVeda, Susan Posnick Cosmetics and Red Flower.

We are very happy to help Deanna with the branding and marketing for her new business venture and welcome her as a new neighbor in our building. Pure is located right next to our office at 216 West Pacific Avenue, Suite 205. Visit her website or call 509-315-9387 to book your first appointment.

Klündt | Hosmer recently launched a new website for the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe in Tokeland, WA.

Working with historical photographs and images of tribal artwork and artifacts, we created a professional, easy-to-use website that contrasts historical imagery with present-day life. The site presents the history, culture and enterprises of the tribe, while enabling quick online access to the Tribe’s services and agencies.

The Shoalwater Tribe is proud of their culture and their place in the world, and are pleased to use this website to share their history and enterprises with everyone.

Hiyu mas´i, Shoalwater Bay Tribe. Many thanks.

This challenging game of strategy was first developed by Steve Baldwin in the mid-1980's. It became very popular with players around the world.

In 2011, Steve’s son Josh decided to re-release Megiddo with an updated design and new innovative rule change. Klündt | Hosmer re-designed the look of the game for a new generation of players. A redesigned board, instruction booklet and packaging brought new energy to this timeless game, named after an ancient Hebrew city where numerous historical battles were waged.

Megiddo will be available for purchase on Amazon.com and will soon be available as an app for iPhone and Android smart phones.

We love design. And sometimes it really does feel like a game.

The 2012 Spokane Advertising Federation ADDY Awards were held March 9 at the Masonic Center in downtown Spokane. Advertising agencies, design firms and interactive development companies were well represented in the competition, where the judges’ goal was to award the best advertising, graphic design and web design produced in the Spokane region in 2011.

Klündt | Hosmer was proud to win awards in multiple categories at the competition, and celebrate our clients and talented staff that made these projects great:

February 2012—WSU College of Nursing, Grand Corner Dental, Visitors Guide, KH Wins Catalyst Award

WSU College of Nursing Looking Sharp in Print & Online

Last year, we had the opportunity to work on the re-design of the WSU College of Nursing’s annual publication, Focus on Nursing. We were excited when we got a call from Alli Benjamin, Communications and Marketing Manager for college, wanting to work with us again to create this year’s edition. The design needed to continue portraying the program as providing a high quality nursing education to a national audience in a scholarly, yet modern way (kind of a tricky task!). The presentation introduces some new design elements that the college will be using to tie into other marketing materials, and is paired with well-written, interesting articles about the college’s programs, students and faculty. It is being distributed through printed copies as well as an online flip book.

Alli Benjamin had these kind words to say about the project: "The publication is one of our strongest marketing tools in recruiting students, faculty, and connecting with nurse leaders throughout the Northwest. Klündt | Hosmer nailed the look we were going for and executed the work seamlessly. We have received several compliments on this piece and faculty have remarked how it is an excellent leave behind, capturing and celebrating what it means to be a Cougar nurse.”

Download Focus on Nursing in PDF format.

Grand Corner Dental Smiling About New Look

In preparation for moving their thriving dental business to a new, beautiful building and adding another dentist – Joshua R. Cochran, DMD – in 2011, Stan Sargent, DDS was in need of a name change and new visual brand identity.

We enjoyed helping Dr. Sargent and his team pull together a cohesive brand, from their logo and lobby signage, to their website and print materials. The level of service you will receive from the waiting room to the dental chair at Grand Corner Dental is exemplary, and the brand needed to clearly reflect this attribute, while also taking into consideration Dr. Sargent’s friendly approachability.

Serving patients, children to seniors, Dr. Sargent wanted the character of the practice to be positive, uplifting and friendly. The logo we developed conveys an upbeat and happy tone, with a cleaver rendering of the letter “G” promoting the name of the practice Grand Corner Dental, which is located at Grand Avenue and 37th Avenue.

Visit Spokane's Visitors Guide Wins National Award for Excellence

For a number of years, Klündt | Hosmer has designed the Spokane Visitors Guide in partnership with the Visit Spokane team. Last week, we were excited to find out that Visit Spokane won a silver medal for the 2011 Spokane Visitors Guide from the North American Travel Journalist Association for excellence in travel writing, photography and promotion. Each year, 120,000 full color, 88-page magazines are printed to promote the region. We are proud of our work with Visit Spokane and enjoy every opportunity to work with Jeanna Hofmeister, Keith Backsen, Polly Phalen, Cheryl Kilday and the rest of the Visit Spokane team. For more information about this great organization, check out www.visitspokane.com.

Klündt | Hosmer was honored to be the recipient of an award from Inland Business Catalyst Magazine’s “Best B2B Firms 2011” reader poll. We received the Gold Award for Best Print Design Business in their 2011 Business Survey.

Our team has worked hard for the past 24 years to produce exemplary corporate branding and print design, in addition to the other visual communication and advertising services that we provide. It was great to be recognized by the business people of this region. The award culminated in a networking event held at the Bank of America Building in downtown Spokane on January 26.

November 2011—New Employees, Dr. Susan Kohls, Smartop, Patti’s Anniversary

New Trade Show Booth for Leisure Concepts Makes a Splash in Vegas

Earlier this month, Jean Klündt and Diane Mahan made it to Vegas with the new trade show booth Klündt | Hosmer designed for Leisure Concepts and their new product Smartop, which was set up at the International Pool, Spa and Patio Show at Mandalay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Walking into the convention center, it was apparent that Leisure Concepts made a big impact. As expected, blue, aqua and white dominated the show floor, so the unique two-sided, bold-colored booth we designed stood out among the others. Since we're not about the expected, the 50 foot by 70 foot booth included a mirrored layout, featuring a striking green side with a strong feminine silhouette that introduced the new Smartop spa cover, and a strongly branded orange and blue side for Leisure Concepts spa accessories.

While doing some people-watching, it was clear that attendees did a noticeable double-take as they walked by the booth, then couldn’t keep their eyes off the design – it really drew people into the booth, which gave Leisure Concepts staff the opportunity to sell their products to dealers who came from all over the world.

Dr. Susan Kohls Unveils a New Building, Brand and Website

It's always like Christmas around the office when a client's website goes live. Launching Dr. Susan Mahan Kohls' site was no different. The colors of the site reflect the warm and inviting colors in both the new brand package we designed and her office interior. The site provides patients with a personal look at her practice, including an introduction to her associate Dr. Frank Lynn Wright and her staff, while featuring important information and resources. Dr. Kohls' South Hill Spokane office is easily accessible at 2020 E 29th Avenue.

After the recent launch of Dr. Kohls’ website, she told us, “I am extremely thrilled with my new website. It reflects our philosophy of practice exactly as I imagined it would. Everyone at Klündt | Hosmer was so professional and easy to work with. I appreciate all the research that was done to design my site to be user friendly and informational to my current patients and to patients looking for a new dental home.”

Celebrating 15 Years of Patti!

Patti Nichols is Klündt | Hosmer’s behind-the-scenes doer of all things financial, or really anything for that matter. She is responsible for managing the office and handling accounts receivable and payable. If you have received an invoice or a check from us in the past 15 years, you have received it from Patti.

And that’s the point of this Spotlight story: Patti just celebrated her 15th anniversary at Klündt | Hosmer and we couldn’t let that milestone go unrecognized. As our longest-term employee, Patti has been with the firm through the majority of its history. Her expertise in managing our financial software and accounts keeps us running efficiently and profitably. She also bakes killer birthday cakes (a.k.a. “Patti Cakes”) and makes sure the most essential (and fun!) office supplies are stocked, which makes our staff incredibly grateful and functional.

Congratulations and thank you, Patti – it’s been a great 15 years working with you!

Two New Hires Bring the Fountain of Youth to K|H

We’re very excited to boast about the latest additions to our team: Katie Kolahi, Account Coordinator and Tyler Kracht, Designer.

Katie worked with us as an intern this summer after receiving her BA in Communication in Advertising at Washington State University. We liked having her around so much that we offered her an Account Coordinator position. Katie is from the Seattle area and decided that Spokane is the place where she wanted to start her career. She is detail-oriented, creative, and a real pleasure to work with.

Tyler came to us from a graphic design position at Pierpoint Media. Before that, he studied at Alexandria Tech College in Minnesota where he won multiple ADDY awards for his design work. Tyler is a hard worker and talented designer, and brings a background in progressive design and photography to our team. His energy and enthusiasm are contagious.

We are excited to have both Katie and Tyler on our team, and encourage you to stop and say hello to each of them next time you’re in the office.

We've been keeping busy handing out our nifty mugs and getting people's Mug Shots. We've posted photos of our friends with their new mugs in an album on our Facebook page.

Don’t forget to "Like" us on Facebook and stop by our office for your free K|H Mug!

September 2011—Stamper Rubens’ New Look, ADCO Brand, Hope2Japan Shirts, KH Mug Shots

Stamper Rubens Launches New Visual Brand

For some time, the partners at Stamper Rubens, P.S. have been hearing us make a compelling case for a strong visual brand. Earlier this year, they hired us to redesign their corporate identity and develop a new website and signage for the firm.

Working closely with their partners, we created a logo design, stationery package and completely revamped the design and functionality of their website. New photos of the partners and staff were taken by J. Craig Sweat Photography.

The new look portrays that Stamper Rubens, P.S. delivers high quality legal services with good value, and brings fresh awareness and name recognition to the firm. It has been well received by the partners and is energizing their entire team.

New Brand and Promotion Packaged Up for ADCO

ADCO Manufacturing of Sanger, CA hired Klündt | Hosmer to develop a complete brand presentation package including a new visual identity, stationery package, tradeshow exhibit, product sheets and a website for their packaging machinery company.

Working under an aggressive deadline, the design was launched Monday at PACK EXPO 2011 in Las Vegas. Our client reported on Facebook that they received more sales leads than ever before and recived five new machine orders at the show. Great news!

The tradeshow exhibit panels and structure were developed by Skyline/San Diego and Nolan-Thomas of Sanger, CA. Johnston Printing handled the printing of the product sheets and the website is hosted with Klündt | Hosmer.

As we mentioned in our April Spotlight, we jumped at the chance to help Mits Nakamura from HOTSTART and the Spokane-Nishinomiya Sister City Society by designing a special t-shirt to help raise funds for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We created a pro bono t-shirt design that was printed at cost by Gayle Coston at Stadium Sports. The shirts were promoted through a Facebook campaign, a special website and at public events.

This edition’s news is that as of last week, Mits and his group have reached their goal of selling over 3,400 “Hope2Japan” t-shirts. About $31,450 generated from sales will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross towards efforts to support the victims of this natural disaster.

Klündt | Hosmer was proud to be part of this important fundraising effort. Thank you to those who purchased and wore your support for the people of Japan!

We've been so busy at Klündt | Hosmer this summer handing out our new mugs and getting people's Mug Shots, we had to order a second batch of mugs. We've posted photos of our friends with their new mugs in an album on our Facebook page.

August 2011—McGregor Company, Ritzville Blues Festival, Step UP Spokane, Valley Real Life Church

Planting Online Seeds for the McGregor Company

The McGregor Company is the largest independent agricultural company of their kind in the Pacific Northwest. After over 110 years in business, we launched a fresh new website for them.

The site gives the company full control over the content and integrates with their customer account system. Featured prominently is a corporate video, shot by Mortimore Productions, and a customized Google Map feature to access each of McGregor’s 36 office locations.

Following the launch of the site, Leslie Hammer, Communications & Training Coordinator, Recruiting, told us:

“Congrats to you and your team for making all of us feel good about who we work for and how we are represented on the internet.”

Blues, Brews & BBQs at the Ritzville Blues Festival!

This summer, Klündt | Hosmer had the privilege of designing a poster to promote the Ritzville Blues Festival. In its 18th and final year, the festival brought in entertainers and concert-goers from far and wide to enjoy music, food and brews, set against the backdrop of the fantastic Ritzville community.

Stephen McFadden of the Ritzville Adams County Journal, asked us to develop a poster design that was eye-catching and artistic in nature, to lend a stronger professional impression of the festival to their audiences. With a bold color palette and iconic guitar imagery, the poster proudly presented the complete lineup of musicians who graced the stage this past July. The design was very well-received and was used on fliers, t-shirts and other print promotions.

Klündt | Hosmer helps Step UP, step up!

Step UP Spokane, a community support system designed to help you get healthy and fit, launched its newly designed website in July! Klündt | Hosmer worked with Step UP Director Julie Humphreys, Kristine Crane (of KL Crane Associates) and the Board of Step UP Spokane on the development of a logo and new website design to promote their effort to combat obesity and related diseases linked to being overweight and inactive.

The website was programmed by KL Crane Associates and provides users an easy way to track workouts, physical activity and get encouraged to be (and stay) fit! Get motivated, meet goals, win prizes—it’s that easy! And it’s FREE!

Visit Step UP Spokane here and step up by signing yourself up today!

A solid visual foundation for Valley Real Life

As a youthful and innovative presence in their community, Valley Real Life wanted an image to personify their church that was contemporary and professional. Based on their answers to our Branding Survey we produced a logo that is traditional yet unconventional, evocative of their active and thriving demographic.

Stuart Vogelman, Executive Pastor at Valley Real Life Ministries, emailed us upon completion of the project, saying, “Outstanding work. We have been waiting on this for a year. Awesome!! What a blessing, Rick. Thank you so much.”

Thank you Valley Real Life, for bringing us into a truly great project.

July 2011—Red Lion Ad Campaign, Rockwood Retirement, Baby Lily Martin, KH Mug Shots

Red Lion Ad campaigns end up NAKED

Early this Spring, Red Lion Hotels came to us for help with the creative development of some ad campaigns to boost occupancy and drive visitors to their hotels. After much conceptualization, the first to launch are the Red Lion Road Trip and Naked Rate campaigns.

Red Lion Road Trip targets travelers with an incentive to stay at a Red Lion and receive a $50 cash card for gas. Naked Rate features a stripped-down room rate. Offer does not include soap, towels, heat, sheets or clothing. Just kidding, it actually includes all these things except for the clothing... which is optional, but only in your room.

We enjoyed working with the Red Lion marketing team to produce these unique and exciting campaigns, which they are implementing in print and online, with extensions on TV and radio.

Learn more about the Red Lion Road Trip cash card incentive. Look for the Naked Rate ads and other creative promotions to launch in the near future.

A New Online Presence for Rockwood Retirement Communities

Just in time for summer, we launched a new website for Rockwood Retirement Communities, a leader in Spokane's retirement scene. Rockwood has provided residents with comfortable retirement living for over 50 years, and has three locations: Rockwood South Hill, Rockwood at Hawthorne, and Rockwood Appleway Court.

Earlier this year they were ready for a new website that better reflected the communities and its residents. The new site focuses on fresh content and key messaging, and features photos of actual residents.

Also in the Klündt | Hosmer queue for Rockwood Retirement are continued promotions with Social Media, ad campaigns, and promotion of the new expansion to Rockwood South Hill, The Summit. We are excited to continue our partnership with this great organization!

Stop by their new website.

We're excited to announce the latest addition to the Klündt | Hosmer family, Lily Beth Martin, a baby girl born to Toby and Ashley Martin. Born on June 22 at 2:19am, Lily weighed 6 lb 9 oz, and was 18.75 inches long.

Ashley has been an Account Executive with Klündt | Hosmer since 2005, after graduating from Gonzaga University with a B.A. in Public Relations and Advertising. She's become an integral part of our team, and we are so happy to watch her take on the new role of mother to sweet Lily. We hope for many baby visits to our office before Ashley returns from maternity leave in early September.

Congratulations, Toby and Ashley on your beautiful new family!

June 2011—Cerium Networks, NW Spokane Peds, Ken Ortize Book, Wheatland’s Telly

New Website for Cerium Networks

Cerium Networks is a unified communications company headquartered in Spokane, WA with seven offices serving customers throughout the Pacific Northwest. They hired us to develop an updatable, dynamic website offering information on their products and services, and to serve as a powerful online registration tool for the seminars and events they host throughout their markets.

We started with an update of Cerium Networks’ logo design and tagline. Following that, we designed a progressive, technically-appealing website that presents the appropriate online image for the company.

Working closely with Cerium Networks’ marketing and technical team, we delivered and launched a complete website, including a custom-programmed registration system and content management system that their staff will use to update and maintain the site's content. A complete, client-implemented social media strategy wrapped up the project.

NW Spokane Pediatrics radio spot hits the airwaves... ARF ARF!

Earlier this year, Northwest Spokane Pediatrics expressed interest in expanding their marketing efforts, and came to Klündt | Hosmer for development of a radio spot. Having designed their visual brand as well as their advertising and marketing materials, we had a keen sense for what would work well on the radio.

Produced by Hamilton Studio and Chris White of House of Sound, the :30 second spot features Tanner the therapy dog, whose pawprint is also featured in their logo. Tanner attracts visitors of all types—health notwithstanding! Klündt | Hosmer drew upon this unique (and repeat) instance when writing and directing the spot, heard here. We made sure to receive Tanner's bark of approval!

You can see their visual brand and learn more about the practice by visiting their website.

Ken Ortize finds Grace and Truth in his new book about Parenting

In the wake of designing Calvary Spokane's new logo and website, Klündt | Hosmer was approached by Lead Pastor Ken Ortize to design and lay out his new book.

Parenting by Grace & Truth looks at the challenge of parenting from a fresh new perspective. As Ken notes, the book is not written by an expert, but a survivor. It is his firm conviction that the first place we need to look for answers is God's Word, the Bible.

Unlike many parenting books that reflect the values and views of contemporary society and place emphasis upon behavioral techniques that manipulate and control behavior, Parenting by Grace & Truth focuses upon biblical truths that invite God's Spirit of Grace as a means of building godly character in both child and parent.

Ken's book is being sold at the Calvary Spokane bookstore. Additionally, their website is at www.calvaryspokane.com

Klündt | Hosmer and Wheatland Bank take home a Telly!

Klündt Hosmer is pleased to announce our receipt of a 2011 Telly Award, for our development and production of a TV spot for Wheatland Bank's "What's Your Bank Made Of?" campaign. The New York-based Telly Awards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, along with other digital and broadcast media.

Nearly 11,000 entries from all 50 U.S. states and numerous countries were reviewed and judged by a panel of over 500 accomplished industry professionals serving as judges in this year's competition. Mike Bold at Digital Itch and our friends at the Hamilton Studio helped produce the spot.

A recent project we completed was a printed folder and timeline piece that the Kalispels can use when making presentations or sending information to parties interested in learning more about what the tribe is all about.

The folder utilizes historic photographs of Kalispel tribal members, elements from nature and Dean Davis’ scenic photographs of the Pend Oreille River on the reservation. The design conveys a sense of closeness the Kalispels have to their heritage and the natural environment. We wrote narrative for the folder that describes the background, challenges and hopeful future that exists for the Tribe. A timeline piece, showcasing historical and modern photographs of tribal members, highlights key influences on Kalispel life throughout history.

We think the folder and timeline piece turned out beautifully. April Pierre, Kalispel Communications Manager, told us that this project is her new favorite of all the work we have done with the tribe.

t’episte qwmi qwamqwmt lu nxwlxwltn
“In the future, we hope for a wonderful life.”

New Corporate Communication Pieces for Avista

We recently completed a set of financial and corporate communication pieces for Avista. After designing and producing their 2010 “Investing in Our Shared Future” annual report, a 2011 Quick Facts booklet, a 16-page Shared Value summary report and a more extensive online Shared Value report were created.

The design of all these projects carries through a consistent look, showcasing photographs of Avista employees and infrastructure. The series of materials presents a professional, understandable message that helps readers better understand Avista's financial position, their plans for the future, and how their business builds value for their customers, investors, employees and communities.

As always, we enjoyed working with Avista Communications Manager, Jessie Wuerst, in the creation of these pieces and are proud of how this year's “package” of materials turned out.

Olive Crest Raises a Toast to Kids

Pictured: Olive Crest’s Carol Plischke and Randy Bell with Kolea

On April 29th, Olive Crest (a pro bono client of ours) hosted a fundraising wine tasting event called, “Cheers to Kids” at the beautiful Bozarth Mansion. Olive Crest is a heartwarming organization. They are dedicated to helping abused, neglected and at-risk children and their families. They work tirelessly to meet the individual needs of kids in crisis by providing safe homes, counseling and education for both youth and parents. Each year, Klündt | Hosmer donates the invitation design for this important community event and enjoys attending. We are proud to be part of the success of this important organization.

April 2011—Saint George's, Spark Award Winners, Rypien, Japan

Saint George's Asks, "Do You Have a Dragon in Your House?"

Klündt | Hosmer recently wrapped up a campaign for Saint George's School, which consisted of direct mail post cards and a radio spot. The campaign centered around the school's mascot and communicates the unique qualities of Saint George's School, such as offering students personalized attention to develop their intellectual, artistic, creative and athletic potential.

The campaign's purpose was to help brand awareness and increase enrollment inquires. It was well-received when the direct mail post cards landed in homes within the greater Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area.

The radio spot utilized voice talent from the United States and Britain, adding a unique, authentic voice to the story of the Saint George's dragon. It was written and directed by Klündt | Hosmer and produced by Hamilton Studio.

This was a fun and creative campaign to develop, and it reflected the character and nature of the progressive thinking at Saint George's School. Go Dragons!

Wear Your Support for Japan

A few weeks ago Mits Nakamura, Asia-Pacific Market Research Analyst at HOTSTART, asked us if we would design a t-shirt to raise support for relief efforts following the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11th. The death toll and missing people as of April 15th is over 28,000. About 140,000 people are still living in shelters.

After quickly agreeing to help, we created two designs for the t-shirts. One features the word LOVE and the other consists of a design combining the words HOPE2 and JAPAN on the back. On the front are the same messages in Japanese.

Mits and his team from Spokane-Nishinomiya Sister City Society decided to offer both t-shirts and Gale Coston at Stadium Sports donated the printing. You can purchase a shirt for only $10 each, with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Tsunami relief effort.

To order your t-shirt email: JapanReliefSpokane@gmail.com

The Foundation supports local families battling childhood cancer.

Each year, the Rypien Foundation hosts the Winemakers' Dinner, a fundraising event where supporters come together for a silent and live auction, and five-course gourmet dinner paired with premium regional wines. The 7th annual event was held at the Manito Golf and Country Club on March 12.

March 2011—Lee & Hayes Ad, Susan Mahan Kohls Brand, R U Social?, ADDYs

Big Dreams @ Lee & Hayes

Thinking big is nothing new for Lee & Hayes. That’s one of the reasons they have become one of the most respected IP firms in the nation, and are so successful in helping their clients turn their dreams into tangible profits. The latest print ad we developed for them puts a visual spin on the idea of dreamers and their big innovations. In the design, the word "big" is featured small and reversed out of a circle, tying the visual to the Lee & Hayes brand. The word "dream" is emphasized as the larger of the two words, communicating what is truly big. This unique presentation conveys the innovative thinking behind Lee & Hayes and the clients they serve. The ad builds off the success of last year’s campaign and Lee & Hayes has again won 1st place in best overall IP Law firm.

A New Identity for Susan Mahan Kohls, D.D.S

It sounds like Dr. Kohls has entered the witness protection program when we say she has a new identity, but we assure you she is still practicing the same great dentistry, just in a new location. The foundation for redesigning her new brand identity started long before her new building took shape. We took her through our branding process and arrived at a beautiful logo that met all of her characteristics: stylish, graceful, artful, professional, trustworthy, approachable and friendly. The natural earth colors enhance the logomark and add richness and depth to the visual communication of her practice through a stationery package, signage and soon-to-launch website.

Are You Social or Anti-Social?

By: Diane Mahan

This year brings some interesting trends in social media and search marketing that will shift how we strategize and adapt to new marketing outlets. As social networks reach their saturation point, the economy improves, and people spend less time at home in front of their computers, we will see more emphasis placed on mobile marketing. Combine all these trends with the challenge of new legislation for net neutrality and consumer privacy, and this year promises to alter how we do business online.

So, how does this affect you and your business? That was one of the big questions asked at the SearchFest event I attended in Portland in late February. SearchFest covered search engine marketing and optimization (SEM/SEO), social media strategies/analytics, conversion optimization, keywords, linkbuilding, pay-per-click (PPC) and much more. Every speaker at the conference confirmed that there is no magic social media/marketing wand. The business of doing business online is completely different from how we manage our personal social media accounts. It can’t be viewed as a hobby or add-on. It needs to be looked at as part of your marketing strategy.

How does this differ from what you are doing right now? Start by asking yourself three basic questions:

What are your online marketing goals and where are they written down?

What is your strategy for the next year, and how are you going to measure success?

Who’s coordinating all of this in your business, and do they have enough time or do you need to work with a outside specialist?

With your answers to these questions as a starting point, Klündt | Hosmer can help prepare a strategy that will take you through all the 2011 challenges and onto the next stage. If you are not familiar with the big issues surrounding net neutrality, consumer privacy or any of the online marketing strategies mentioned above, give me a call – I’d love to spend a few minutes talking with you!

Klündt | Hosmer has worked with Davidson Companies over the years on several brochure and presentation material projects promoting the investment services offered by the firm. We were very excited when their Great Falls, MT corporate team hired us to design and produce the company's 2010 Annual Report.

Our team developed the annual report theme of "Two Steps Forward. One Step at a Time." emphasizing the conservative corporate philosophy inherent in their business. Klündt | Hosmer also managed the graphic design, art direction, writing and production of the annual report, which was printed at Advanced Litho in Great Falls.

Davidson Companies has provided clients with integrated financial services for over 75 years. The company currently staffs more than 60 offices in 17 states. Thank you to Davidson Companies for enabling us to produce such a beautiful and insightful annual report!

Klündt | Hosmer recently launched a website for Benjamin Taylor Caramels. This online candy boutique is the sweet creation of Jean Klündt and her son Ben Klündt, named after Ben and his brother Taylor. Some of you may have been the recipient of these “Oh so, yummy!” handmade caramels, as Klündt | Hosmer has given them as client gifts over the years. So indulge yourself and savor the delicious flavor of these rich tidbits of heaven (and share or gift them if you can bring yourself to do so!).

Look for Benjamin Taylor Caramels in local Spokane shops soon, or purchase them online now!

Anastazia is wearing her
new Klündt | Hosmer shirt!

In mid-January, Mastery Sheets, Klündt | Hosmer's Senior Web Developer, went on a Compassion International Sponsor Tour to Tanzania, in East Africa, where she met a young lady she's been sponsoring for eight years. The tour featured visits to many Compassion child development centers, a day with her sponsored child Anastazia, a walk part way up the Mawenzi peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, shopping, and making new friends from America, Great Britain and Tanzania. Although the weather was very hot (being below the equator, Tanzania is now experiencing summer), the food was great and the experiences very meaningful and memorable. Mastery brought back carvings of African animals in ebony, as well as half a kilo of Arabica coffee grown in the volcanic soil of Mt. Kilimanjaro, for her KH friends. We are glad to have her back, safe and sound!

January 2011—David Green, Calvary Spokane, Hooked on SNWP, Kolea @ KH

David Green CPA Brand ID

Klündt | Hosmer worked with David Green CPA PLLC to design a visual brand for a new accounting firm. The design has been implemented through the firm’s stationery package and office signage.

After leaving a successful career at Moss Adams, David Green launched his own tax practice, which is located in the former Schade Brewery building in Spokane’s University District.

The new brand identity consists of a stylized D and G, and projects a strong, trustworthy, yet fun image. Perfect attributes for the experienced, client-focused tax team at David Green CPA PLLC.

God Bless Calvary Spokane’s New Website

When Calvary Spokane’s 4,000 members or other spiritual seekers want to go online to learn about God, find out about a church service, watch or listen to a sermon, or read the pastor’s blog, they can go to calvaryspokane.com – a new website that Klündt | Hosmer recently launched.

The staff and volunteers at Calvary were instrumental in the development of the site, and many hours went into the design and programming to achieve the project’s goals.

In the site, visitors can learn about Calvary Spokane and its many ministries, volunteer to serve, or submit a personal prayer request. The website delivers a contemporary and caring user-experience, much like the church itself.

Calvary Spokane wanted to make it easy for people to use technology to access the “good news” of Jesus Christ. Klündt | Hosmer developed this site in answer to that prayer.

KH Gets Hooked on Second Nature

Klündt | Hosmer recently designed and produced a very unique presentation for Second Nature Wilderness Programs (link to web site) showcasing their wide range of experience through bio cards of their partners, therapists and admissions staff. The cards are bound using a carabineer, which ties the concept to the outdoor therapeutic wilderness programs offered by Second Nature, and are used to help Educational Consultants know how to refer adolescents and young adults in need of Second Nature’s services. The project was printed and laminated by Lawton Printing. The piece has been very well received and does a great job helping Second Nature to stand out among their competitors.

Kolea Baker Joins Klündt | Hosmer

We are very excited to announce that Kolea Baker has joined Klündt | Hosmer as Business Development Director. She is responsible for expanding Klündt | Hosmer’s market reach and introducing the firm to new business opportunities that will be managed by the firm’s principals and staff.

Kolea started her career in Seattle as an art director at Chiat Day/Livingston. Following that, she enjoyed a successful 25-year career managing business for Illustrators, photographers and surface designers. Some of her clients included General Mills, Citibank, Federal Express, British Telecom, John Hancock Insurance, Chronicle Books, Wizards of the Coast, Microsoft, and Johnson & Johnson.

Most recently, Kolea was a principal at Grocreate Design & Marketing in Seattle, a full-service creative firm where she developed business and managed client projects. Kolea served on the Board of Directors for the Seattle Design Association and with other professional organizations, and founded a national non-profit advocacy organization for art professionals.

We are inspired by Kolea’s energy and industry experience. She is a powerful and trusted addition to our design and marketing team.

December 2010—Spotlight Special Video—It's a K|H Christmas!

K|H Answers 11 Holiday Questions

(Yes, there really are 11… we counted… twice)

The big question every year is what to do for our Christmas card. This year, thanks to a friendly elf named Annie Stillar (previously our Web Traffic Manager), our card comes to you in the form of a video. Working with our much taller elf, Darin, Annie produced a video that features the Klündt | Hosmer staff responding candidly to some off-the-wall holiday questions. Jeanie elf helped with editing and Darin's garage band (The Punk Rats) lent the music. Thank you Annie for helping us spread the cheer this holiday season. There is sure to be something very special in your stocking this year. And, to our clients, colleagues and friends—we hope you enjoy the video and have a very blessed Christmas!

November 2010—Randall & Hurley, First Night, Spokane Pediatrics, Thanks!

Having Fun Promoting Northwest Spokane Pediatrics

For the last several years, Klündt | Hosmer has helped Northwest Spokane Pediatrics get the word out about their unique pediatrics practice. Beginning with the creation of a new visual brand, our work evolved into a website, print materials and advertising campaign. We have helped Northwest Spokane Pediatrics grow their practice by communicating to parents in a fun, educational, eye-catching way. With Tanner the therapy dog, a friendly office atmosphere and a multilingual staff—this practice has unique offerings and we have been glad to help them spread the word, whether about seasonal child safety, vaccination availability or to communicate their mantra to “Get Out and Do Something!” Office Administrator, Jacki McManus recently shared with us, “We love you guys and you certainly have put the word out about our pediatric practice. We are so busy we had to hire another ARNP. Thank you just isn't enough!”

Celebrating 10 Years of First Night Spokane

Klündt | Hosmer is proud to be celebrating 10 years of supporting First Night Spokane. To commemorate the last 10 years, this year’s poster highlights design elements and/or characters from each of the previous posters. It is a great tribute to the first 10 years and features a wonderful collection of the various “faces” of First Night from the past decade. Our hats go off to Judy Heggem-Davis for the great illustrations over the years, as well as Executive Director Chris Martin, Associate Director Lona Barnum, and all the other wonderful people who have worked so hard over the years to make this event such a success!

Randall & Hurley Aligns Online Presence with Company Values

Randall & Hurley called on Klündt | Hosmer to redesign their website when they realized their online image wasn't representing the company accurately, as it was communicating a much different message from who they really are.

Klündt | Hosmer turned that image around by bringing Randall & Hurley’s online presence into alignment with their company standards as an industry leader in retirement plan services, who centers it’s business on retirement plan design, administration, consulting and reporting for all plan types.

Thanks for the Holiday!

Monday morning in our staff meeting, we talked about the plans we are making for Thanksgiving next week. Some of us are going out of town to see extended families, while others are celebrating on a smaller scale, at home, all alone, with an over-nuked frozen turkey dinner. But one common thread for all of us was the recognition that we have so much to be thankful for this year. Even those of us who will be spending the day after Thanksgiving recuperating from eating our weight in gravy-drenched goodness and enduring Aunt Edna’s telling of Uncle Fredrick’s vasectomy for the umpteenth time, will still be feeling thankful. Even if it’s just being thankful that the holiday is over.

This may sound corny, because it is, but we really are thankful for each other. Klündt | Hosmer is blessed with an amazing staff. We are thankful for our clients and of course our families too, all of them, even Aunt Edna.

At the end of the day, as they say, or at least as we will next Thursday—TGIT. And we mean it.

October 2010—Rockwood Ads, WSU Focus on Nursing, Lawton Branding, KH Harvest Party

Rockwood Retirement Communities Illustrated Through New Ads

Klündt | Hosmer recently developed a new advertising campaign for Rockwood Retirement Communities. Beginning with a series of testimonial ads featuring actual Rockwood residents, Jean Klündt and Hamilton Studio enjoyed a day of photographing these special residents as they shared why living at Rockwood has created a more comfortable and carefree lifestyle for them. The messaging is being carried into billboards, print ads and other media.

Rockwood Retirement Communities has been in Spokane for over 50 years, and Rockwood South Hill and Rockwood Hawthorne are the only two accredited, non-profit continuing Care Communities between Seattle and Minneapolis.

Klündt | Hosmer Makes WSU Nursing Program Look Good

Earlier this fall, Klündt | Hosmer helped the WSU Nursing program re-design its publication, Focus on Nursing. Lindsay Warner, Director of Communications for the program in Spokane, worked with us to create the new look. The design portrays the program as providing a high quality nursing education to a national audience and was created in an online and print version. The publication highlights the program’s accomplishments, and features stories on benefactors, students, staff and issues related to nursing and experts in the field. The issue has been received with very positive reviews. GO COUGS!

Lawton Family Looking Brand New at 70

Lawton Printing recently hired Klündt | Hosmer to develop new names, brand identities and website designs for the Lawton group of companies. Through seven decades of business, Lawton Printing had expanded its offerings into four divisions and a variety of products and services. The time had come to rebrand the parent company and its subsidiaries to communicate the essence of Lawton and its divisions as the resource for reliable services for communication and access to information in unique and creative ways

Lawton serves as the parent company, with Lawton Printing Services, Lawton Publications, naviTabs and InnovAging as sub-brands.

The logo family utilizes the same core graphic, while emphasizing each division through a different brand color. The symbol shows entwining circles linking together, forming a connected whole, representing each division. The core image transfers well to the identity of the different divisions creating a unique, yet consistent corporate identity across all Lawton business channels. The new design will be incorporated into business cards, signage and websites for the company.

K|H Punkin’ Chunkin’ Party

A few weeks ago, Klündt | Hosmer staff and their families made our annual pilgrimage to Darin and Jean’s house in Green Bluff to celebrate Fall. Even though the weekend weather was a little rainy, we all enjoyed the hot cider, Longhorn BBQ, inflatable slide and trip to Knapp’s Farm in the back of Darin’s 1952 Chevy pickup to get pumpkins with the kids. It was a nice time for our staff to get together away from the stresses of project deadlines and to get caught up with each other’s families.

September 2010—Kalispel Tribe, Dermatology Specialists, Michael P. Anderson, Darin’s Book

New Ads Show Kalispel Tribe as True Community Partner

Wanting to tell the story of their long-time commitment to the environment, their community and caring for others, the Kalispel Tribe of Indians came to Klündt | Hosmer to develop a print ad campaign to be used in local and regional publications. The messages of the ads focus on the fact that what was part of their tribe's philosophy long ago is still true today—from helping the local economy grow to improving education and healthcare for those in need. Using elements from nature, surrounding actual historical photos of tribal members, the ads tell a true story of how the tribe contributes and cares in a very authentic way.

New Skin for Dermatology Specialists of Spokane

Klündt | Hosmer recently designed a new brand identity for Dermatology Specialists of Spokane. The new look includes a logo, website, signage, advertising and brochures. The new image reflects the high quality service provided by the clinic's team that includes Richard S. Herdener, MD; Katherine Bruya Reed, MD; Christina Marino, MD; Trent Lengl, PA-C; Eric Dudenhofer, ARNP; and Lisa Paurus, Clinical Esthetician. Their physician-lead Laser and Cosmetic Center was also included in the re-design, which focuses on the health and beauty aspect of their practice.

Michael P. Anderson Website Launches

Working with Jessie Wuerst, Communications Manager for Avista Corp., Klündt | Hosmer designed a website to help "keep the dream alive" of Michael P. Anderson—one of seven American heroes who perished aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. The Michael P. Anderson Memorial Aerospace Program at The Museum of Flight in Seattle gives underserved children of color from throughout Washington state the chance to participate in the museum's exciting educational programs rooted in aerospace. The new website tells Michael's story and gives visitors the ability to support the program through donations.

Darin Klündt wrote a book?

Most of you know Darin as a talented designer and creative director, however, Darin can apparently write too. Inspired by an idea to share his words of wisdom on marriage with his newly wedded son Ben and daughter-in-law Lauren, Darin put his creative talent to work and broke new ground with a book he wrote for them. The book, Dad's Ten Tips for a Happy Marriage includes advice from a father who, according to his wife and kids, thinks he knows everything. It contains wisdom, anecdotes and tips to help guide any newly wedded couple on their journey to wedded bliss.
August 2010—Bussey Endodontics, Klündt-Sargent Wedding, KH Employee PHoto Shoot

Need a Root Canal in Virginia?

When Bussey Endodontics in Virginia needed a new visual brand and website for their practice, Dr. Lisa Ellingsen of Ellingsen Endodontics in Spokane Valley (a Klündt | Hosmer client) referred her friend Dr. Kelly Bussey to Klündt | Hosmer.

Working via phone and online presentations, we designed a brand identity for Bussey Endodontics and expanded that brand into a website design that promotes the services available in their two office locations in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, VA.

The website presents an overview of the doctors and services, and enables dentists to submit patient referrals through an easy-to-use online form.

Timeless Design Carries into Wedded Bliss!

When your parents are graphic designers, rest assured that the invitation part of wedding planning is covered. So, when Darin and Jean Klündt's son Ben got engaged, the fun began! Jean and Diane Mahan drew inspiration for the invitation from the famed Boston landscape designers, the Olmstead Brothers, who in 1886 designed the garden gates on the grounds of Bozarth Mansion, where the wedding ceremony was to be held. The garden gate graces the front of the invitation, and a garden theme runs throughout the invitation package and program.

The fun and celebration continued on July 30th, 2010 when Ben and Lauren tied the knot in the beautiful garden courtyard of the 124-year-old estate where, 25 years ago this summer, Jean and Darin exchanged their own wedding vows.

Congrats Ben and Lauren!

Dean Davis, Making Us Look Good!

We recently had fun shooting new staff portraits with Dean Davis in his studio. The new images will be used in project proposals, our website, press releases and other media that might need photos of our smiling faces. Of course, we ended up with a beautiful gallery of nice images of each team member, but there's always the fun outtakes we just couldn't pass up sharing. Enjoy!

July 2010—Gonzaga, Spokane CVB, Strategic Research

Gonzaga Invites Students to "Be Inspired"

Klündt | Hosmer recently completed the latest 60-page undergraduate admission view book for Gonzaga University. This 2010-2011 edition is an update of the previous version, with fresh articles, colors, images and updated academic information throughout the book to present high school juniors and seniors the options and benefits of applying to Gonzaga University.

Inspiring and fun photographs were shot by on-campus and local photographers, including Dean Davis, and were incorporated into the view book design. Klündt | Hosmer has guided the design and production of the past four view books for the university. Carie Weeks, Assistant Dean of Admission, wrote and managed the project.

The design for the view book is being incorporated into posters, brochures and other undergraduate admission materials for Gonzaga University.

Strategic Research Refreshes Web Presence

Building on the visual brand and website that Klündt | Hosmer created five years ago for Strategic Research Associates, we recently completed a next-generation website project that updated the visuals and functionality of the site. The update included incorporating a content management system that allows the client to maintain their own content and keep their site updated for visitors and for search engine optimization.

The project was a success and Dean Moorehouse, President of Strategic Research, was happy with the results. He told us: "I really like the refreshed site, and working with you again renewed my appreciation for the excellence you bring to the design community. Thank you!"

1.8 Million Eyes on Spokane

Klündt | Hosmer recently completed a new TV commercial for the Spokane Regional CVB and their Vice President and Director of Destination Marketing, Jeanna Hofmeister. The new 30 second spot began airing on June 22nd and will run through the summer. This energetic spot features a family of 5 talking about their recent trip to Spokane and includes clever cuts in dialogue and video with a custom music score. Nearly 2 million viewers in Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Montana will see this spot as it airs during peak demographic times. Online content advertising reflecting the look and feel of the spot will appear during that same time and will direct web traffic to SummerInSpokane.com.

June 2010—Wheatland Bank Spot, Spokane CVB Visitors Guide, Avista Wall Display

What's Wheatland Bank Made Of?

Building on the ad concept we developed for Wheatland Bank last year, we created an innovative :30 second TV spot to connect primarily with business owners in need of lending from a bank in a strong financial position.

The campaign asks "What's Your Bank Made Of?" and uses animated words that are derived from the letters in Wheatland Bank's name. This is a compelling way to tell the story of Wheatland Bank while keeping their brand at the center of the message.

Mike Bold and our friends at Hamilton Studio helped us produce the TV spot, which is being implemented through a regional TV campaign. The concept was also incorporated in a regional print and outdoor advertising campaign, as well as in-branch messaging. You can view the TV commercial on the Wheatland Bank home page.

Get Your Official 2010-2011 Spokane Regional Visitors Guide

The new 92-page, full color Visitors Guide is out and in racks. With amazing photography, fantastic editorial, beautiful design and informative maps, this year's visitors guide is by far the most comprehensive guide to the region. The perfect-bound publication highlights cultural, recreational, golf and family activities available in the Spokane area.

A great team comprised of creatives at Klündt | Hosmer, Jeanna Hofmeister, Spokane Regional CVB Vice President and Director of Destination Marketing, and CVB staff, worked to design and produce the guide.

Get your guide while they're hot!
Avista Annual Report Theme Makes Impressive Wall Art

As you saw in last month's Spotlight email, the 2009 Avista Annual report theme "Energy for a Smart Future" has been well received. It has now found its way into several other applications, including a wall display at Avista Corporate Headquarters that Communications Manager Jessie Wuerst asked us to assist with. It was fun to take the elements from the book and design them at a larger scale to create a visually impactful wall display. The vinyl graphics behind the panels set the stage for the "Innovation Forward" timeline pieces to be read about on the boards-all important parts of Avista's history, demonstrating their philosophy of innovation and sustainability. The display was debuted at the Avista Annual Meeting of Shareholders on May 13th.

May 2010—Spark Winners, Hamilton, Avista, Ness

Hamilton Studio Helps Make "Logan" Beautiful

Klündt | Hosmer has been committed to Logan Olson and her magazine, "Logan" for several years. A critical aspect of the quality of this publication is the professional photography that is provided pro bono by The Hamilton Studio.

Don Hamilton has been supportive of Logan and her vision since the beginning. For each issue, his team works with our art directors in shooting the cover photograph of Logan and interior images as needed. They donate many hours to each issue, helping make a positive difference in the lives of young people living with disabilities.

The Hamilton team is awesome to work with. Logan tells us, "The Hamilton Studio makes me feel like I'm the most beautiful person on earth!"

Thanks, and a "High Five" to Don, Lorna, Matt and Michael for capturing Logan's true beauty: her spirit!

Avista's Energy for a Smart Future

This year, Klündt | Hosmer once again partnered with Communications Manager Jessie Wuerst on the Avista Corp. annual report. With the theme of "Energy for a Smart Future," the 2009 report features imagery rendered in an illustrative, whimsical, earth-friendly style. Anne Ogle, the daughter of Avista employee Brad Ogle, appears throughout the piece representing Avista's future of sustainable energy. Our team art directed, designed, proofed and managed the project, and worked with J. Craig Sweat Photography and Ross Printing.

The 127-page print publication, along with the online presentation, delivered on a tight schedule and with stringent requirements.
