Mastery Attends Star Wars Celebration IV in Los Angeles, CA
Klündt | Hosmer senior web developer Mastery Sheets recently went on an 11-day MINI Cooper road trip to attend Star Wars Celebration IV for the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. She spent two days at the show in Los Angeles, while visiting dozens of exhibitors' booths and meeting artists who create cover art, posters and product design for Star Wars merchandise.
A highlight of the event was An Hour with Anthony Daniels (the actor who played C3PO), and viewing an exhibit from the LucasFilm Archives of props, costumes and models used in making the six Star Wars films. Mastery also stopped by Cupertino, CA on the return trip to pay homage at the corporate headquarters of Apple, Inc.

Klündt | Hosmer Designs for “Style-minded” Disabled Young People

The cover of the 2nd issue of Logan Magazine.
Klündt | Hosmer and Logan and Laurie Olson have launched the second issue of a new fashion publication called Logan Magazine.
This magazine features inspiring stories and informative product reviews to entertain, inform and educate disabled young adult readers on how to lead a lifestyle that is pleasurable and purposeful.
At 16 years old, Logan Olson sustained a serious brain injury. Her desire to find positive influences for young women with disabilities motivated her to create Logan Magazine with her mom, Laurie. Five years after her injury, that motivation has become a magazine with an initial press-run of 10,000 and a popular web site www.loganmagazine.com.
Klündt | Hosmer guides the creative content, design and produces each issue along with the development of the web site. We work with Hamilton Photography and Film Company on photography for the publication. Diane Mahan and Judy Heggem-Davis are the lead designers on the project, along with Jean Klündt who serves as the creative director.
Joy Carlsen, feature writer for Logan Magazine told us, “The response has been overwhelming, typically a magazine our size gets 50 subscribers after the first issue. We received over 500! Readers tell us they love the look and content of the magazine so much, they just had to subscribe.”
Following the magazine’s launch, Logan was contacted by Oprah, and Good Morning America. Articles about Logan and her project have appeared in the Spokesman-Review and the Seattle Times, in addition to several blogs and web sites. You can view a video on Logan and the launch of the magazine at the Spokesman Review Video Journal (Scroll half-way down the page and click on the image of Logan and Laurie.)
Representatives of Microsoft came to Spokane in January to meet with Logan, Laurie and Klündt | Hosmer, and shot footage in our offices that will be edited into a promotional video on the accessibility features of Microsoft’s Windows Vista® operating system. PBS shot footage here for BizKid$, a television program for young entrepreneurs that will air nationwide, and KING 5 TV also stopped by our offices in April to shoot a segment for Evening Magazine.
Regionally, the publication is available at newsstands at Fred Meyer, Hastings, Shopko, Yokes, Rosauers, and other retail outlets.
We are very excited and proud to be part of Logan Magazine and Logan's mission to bring positive change to the lives of young people living with disabilities.
New Wheatland Bank TV Spot
In March, Klündt | Hosmer created the third in a series of television commercials produced for Wheatland Bank. These spots promote the brand message that when it comes to business and consumer banking, Wheatland Bank thinks differently. This spot entertainingly informs viewers that Wheatland Bank reimburses customers for fees they may incur when using other bank’s ATMs.
Continuing the fairy tale theme from the award-winning “Three Little Pigs” and “Jack and the Beanstalk” spots produced in 2005, this one features "Little Red Riding Hood." The story follows a young woman (Little Red) who wants to buy her grandmother a basket of goodies, while avoiding getting hit with costly ATM fees.
The commercial was written by Darin Klündt and storyboarded by Rick Hosmer. North by Northwest shot the spot on location near the Spokane River, and in a Browne’s Addition B&B. Darin handled the art and creative direction needs and worked closely with Chris Fyan who directed the spot, along with the editing team at NxNW to achieve his vision for the commercial. NxNW did a great job casting the spot and finding just the right props and locations to create the fairy tale atmosphere.
The TV spot is currently airing throughout Wheatland Bank’s market area, and the concept will be used in other advertising and promotion for the bank.
Bienvenidos Sebastian: El Segundo Hijo de los Ortega

Sebastian Ortega
On March 25, 2007 Henry and Anastasia Ortega brought a new baby into the world. At 7 lbs. 13 oz., Sebastian Ortega joined his two and a half–year-old brother, Samuel as the second child in the Ortega household.
The baby has already made a trip to Klündt | Hosmer where we all commented on how much he looks like Henry.
Henry has been a Klündt | Hosmer designer for 8 years and was recently promoted to Art Director. He produces many of our award-winning projects including work for General Dynamics/Itronix, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, Pearson Packaging Systems and the Human Potential Project.
Henry is an expert in Photoshop, but based on the look of his new son, he could gain from a little less dependence on using the “cloning” tool.
Klündt | Hosmer Presents a New Marketing Look for Moss Adams LLP.

The new materials were developed following insightful interviews with Moss Adams staff and clients.
Klündt | Hosmer recently launched an entire slate of print and online corporate presentation materials for Moss Adams LLP, the nation’s 12th largest certified accounting and consulting firm. The firm currently has 19 offices in Washington, Oregon, California, and New Mexico with over 1,700 employees and 200 partners.
The brand development work consisted of redesigning the firm’s stationery systems, corporate collateral materials (including the corporate brochure and 13 industry-niche brochures), a graphic standards guide, and the corporate web site.
Klündt | Hosmer worked closely with key staff from the firm’s Spokane, Seattle, and Portland offices. Jean Klündt, principal of Klündt | Hosmer served as creative and project manager. Klündt | Hosmer’s creative staff served as art directors, designers, writers, and interactive technology developers on these projects.
After the launch, Karen Kenyon, Marketing Manager of Moss Adam’s Seattle Office emailed Jean, stating, “Thanks again for Klündt | Hosmer’s great work. I know the schedule has been brutal, and the volume crushing. The compliments have far exceeded my expectations, as has your ability to understand what we want, and what we need in a visual identity.”
The materials have already received awards, including Best of Division at the recent Inland Northwest ADDYs advertising and design competition held earlier this month in Spokane.
Moss Adams and Klündt | Hosmer are continuing the rebranding of the firm in developing materials for Moss Adams Wealth Services, and Wealth Advisors along with other areas of the company.
Klündt | Hosmer Presents at ADDY Awards

Darin and Diane announce the names of past recipients of the Ad Professional of the Year award. John Robideaux and Shaun Higgins (l-r) look on.
On March 2, 2007 the Spokane Advertising Federation hosted the Inland Northwest ADDY Awards. The ceremony was held at CenterStage in Spokane. Nearly 300 people attended the event.
As the 2005 Advertising Professional of the Year, Darin Klündt was in charge of passing the torch this year's recipient of the award. As this was the 50th anniversary of the "Ad Pro", Darin wanted to do something special. Working with Diane Mahan (Ad Federation Board Member), Darin invited all of the living recipients of the award to attend a pre-function party and come up on stage at the event. Each past Ad Pro was introduced, and the entire group (16 were able to attend) received a standing ovation. Some of the past recipients are in their 80s, and it was a real honor for them to be recognized again for their industry achievements.
After the Ad Professional of the Year presentation (which was awarded to Colleen Quisenberry), the second half of the ADDY ceremonies was presented by Rick Hosmer and Andrei Mylroi of Desautel Hege Communications.
Rick had the pleasure of announcing and presenting awards to Klündt | Hosmer art directors and designers, Diane Mahan, Judy Heggem-Davis, and Lorri Johnston, along with dozens of other recipients.
Klündt | Hosmer had a great year at the ADDYs, winning 12 awards, including "Best of Division" for branding and marketing materials produced for Moss Adams LLP.
Greater Spokane Incorporated: Looking Great
Klündt | Hosmer was hired by the Spokane Economic Development Council and the Spokane Chamber of Commerce to develop a visual brand for the new combined organization: Greater Spokane Incorporated.
Working closely with Rich Hadley and Robin Toth, of the new organization, and Dan Rogers of ModernMind, who assisted with the name and vision development; the organization received a visual identity that represents the mission of “Accelerating Regional Economic Prosperity.”
The design was created from input received from the leadership of Greater Spokane Incorporated and the Executive Board of the Spokane EDC and Chamber. The symbolic design depicts different entities in the community coming together to form a unified, focused, positive force for economic development and a “greater” Spokane.
The new identity was launched on January 31, 2007 at a special event held at the INB Performing Arts Center in Spokane. Nearly 800 business leaders attended the event. The new logo was unveiled on a large screen, on banners throughout the reception area, and in an innovative ice sculpture.

Judging Advertising in Montana (or You Spit Chew on My Wooly Bugger)
by Rick Hosmer, Principal/Creative Director

ADDY judges, Jim Mathis from Sioux Falls, SD; Rick Hosmer, and Alan Yamamoto from Seattle, WA waiting for their drinks at the Sip-n-Dip, one of GQ Magazines top 10 bars in the world.
February 4, 2007
I just got back from Great Falls, Montana where I judged the region’s advertising and design for the American Advertising Federation.
With two other judges from Sioux Falls, SD and Seattle, WA, we put in a couple of long days while judging over 500 entries from across the state. The Montana Advertising Federation hosts were very gracious, and when judging was completed each day, they treated us to the cultural icons of Great Falls, including Eddie’s Steak House, and the Sip-n-Dip Bar, a retro tiki establishment unchanged from the ‘60s which features a window into a swimming pool that often hosts underwater views of swimming mermaids.
The Sip-n-Dip was featured in GQ Magazine as one of the top 10 bars in the world. Besides the mermaids, the bar’s claim to fame is Pat Sponheim, a lounge singer that has tickled the ivories at the Sip-n-Dip for over 40 years playing everything from cowboy tunes to ‘Vegas-style classics. Interestingly enough, after a few hours at the bar, they all begin to sound the same.
Montana’s advertising leans heavily toward cowboy-themes and fly fisherman standing thigh-deep in beautiful mountain streams. Even so, the Big Sky State produces some nice advertising, in addition to lunker Brown Trout. Agencies from Missoula and Bozeman made good showings at the competition. The award ceremony will be held in Great Falls in March 2007.
Two Klündt | Hosmer Clients Featured in Washington CEO
Two Klundt | Hosmer clients were featured in the February 2007 issue of Washington CEO magazine.

BacSTAT is GenPrime's latest product for blood centers and hospitals.
Chris Majer and The Human Potential Project (HP2) has been a client of ours since 1998. His firm is an innovative business consultancy that guides companies and teams to a higher-level of business and personal performance. Klundt | Hosmer developed the brand image, brochures, presentation materials, training materials, and web site for this organization. Chris' clients range from Microsoft and Capital One, to the U.S. Army and Allianz.
GenPrime is a new company that has worked with Klundt | Hosmer for the past two years. They specialize in developing technology that rapidly and accurately tests for the presence of microbes. Their products are in use for homeland security, medical, and fermentation applications. We created product identities, brochures, tradeshow displays, software interface design, and a web site for GenPrime.
These two clients came together when GenPrime hired HP2 to conduct proactive preparation for the firm's significant growth. GenPrime CFO Johnny Humphries put it this way, "Small companies that achieve big things seldom reach their goals without going through a process where they solve their communication and fit and efficiency issues among their people." GenPrime is working with HP2 in order to improve their internal communications and processes to increase their performance in light of their corporate success.
Klundt | Hosmer can vouch for the success of HP2's programs, as our own management team participated in their training over the past 24 months. A five-day intensive and two off-site follow-up sessions in Minnesota, along with weeks of phone conferences, homework, and coaching has given Klundt | Hosmer the higher-performance communication and effectiveness that Chris Majer promises to firms who take his programs seriously.
Darin Burt, a Spokane-based reporter, wrote the insightful article for Washington CEO. "The Power of Learning" can be accessed online.

Klündt | Hosmer continues to "abandon mediocrity" by creating innovative web site design for a wide-variety of clients. Check out a few recently developed web sites below:
Wheatland Bank TV Spots
Klündt | Hosmer is known for the effective and beautiful graphic and web site design that we create. But occasionally we get involved in a project that is outside of the normal scope of a "graphic design firm."
Recently we were hired by Wheatland Bank to develop and produce a series of television spots to promote the bank's brand and convey the message that Wheatland really thinks differently.
Working from real stories from bank customers, Klündt | Hosmer developed two 30-second spots based on a "fairy tale" theme.
The first spot features "The Three Little Pigs." The story is about a real family who built a custom straw bale home. Several banks weren't interested in financing the project because the house construction was too "different." With a loan from Wheatland Bank, the family was able to build their home. This concept was kind of a "no-brainer" for us, because the bank customer was Rick Hosmer, a Klündt | Hosmer principal and creative director.
The second spot features "Jack and the Beanstalk." "Jack" represents the partners who renovated an old building in downtown Spokane and turned it into the exclusive Blue Chip Loft condominiums. This was an innovative project, and Wheatland arranged the financing to make it happen.
Rick Hosmer and Darin Klündt concepted, wrote and storyboarded the spots, and handled art and creative direction, music development, and editing. The footage was shot and edited by North by Northwest Productions, who did a fabulous job scouting locations, building props, shooting, and putting the project together. Thanks to Jeff Oswalt, Vincent DeFelice, Chris Fyan and Jeff Douglas for contributing their vision on these projects.
For those who might not know, the "talent" in the "Pigs" spot are Rick's children, Amanda, Brooke and Callan (as the pigs), and Brendan (as the older brother.)
Klündt | Hosmer Selected Best Graphic Design Firm 2006 by Spokane Business Catalyst Magazine
Klündt | Hosmer was selected as “Best Graphic Design Firm” of 2006 by readers of “Spokane Business Catalyst Magazine.”
The magazine is a publication for business owners and managers in and around the Inland Northwest. Published as a partnership with Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living Magazine and Greg Green.com, the magazine strives to connect business and technology decision-makers and serve as a “catalyst” for regional business development.
The December 2006 issue featured 92 “Best of Business” award winners. Klündt | Hosmer was honored to be selected as the best graphic design firm in the Inland Northwest.
Darin and Jean Attend @ISSUE in NYC
by Darin Klündt
On May 11, 2006 Jean and I attended the @ ISSUE Business & Design Conference in Manhattan. The one day conference looked at the relationship between business and design and how design pays off for savvy businesses.
Presenters at the conference were Bruce Nussbaum, Assistant Managing Editor, Business Week; Paula Scher, Partner, Pentagram; and the infamous Milton Glaser among others.
The conference presented new terms in identity linguistics like "innovation" (this word appears to be the new "black"); along with trends, methods and technology used to create a personal identity.
With technology like the i-Pod and online resources like myspace.com, consumers are looking for customization in communication tools that puts them in charge of the information they are looking for. And so it appears, innovation in every respect, is the key these days.
The conference also looked at success stories like the new branding for Bloomberg and how environmental graphics played a critical roll in its success.
Along with the conference Jean and Igot to spend some time in Manhattan checking out MoMA and the new illustration trends on display as well just being inspired by taking in a Broadway show and scouring the city for the latest design trends. I mean, after all, it is New York.
Darin Receives "Advertising Professional of the Year."
The evening of March 3, 2006 was a memorable night. At the 2006 ADDY Award Show–a celebration of the best advertising and design produced in the Inland Northwest–Darin Klündt was honored as the Spokane Advertising Federation's "Advertising Professional of the Year."
Darin was selected due to his commitment to high-quality design and advertising, his devotion to serving the community with his work, and the leadership that he has provided the industry since 1983.
An audience of over 200 people were treated to a video highlighting Darin's life and showcasing visual communication and branding work that he and his firm have produced over nearly two decades of business. The video was produced by North by Northwest Productions.
Interviews with industry professionals, Andrei Mylroi of Desautel Hege Communications, Don Hamilton of the Hamilton Studios, Chad Johnston of Johnston Printing, Joyce Cameron of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, John Mraz of Anderson Mraz Design, and Rick Hosmer of Klündt | Hosmer were featured in the video, along with childhood and business photographs of Darin, and a soundtrack of music from Darin's early-1980's garage band, The Punk Rats.
The Klündt | Hosmer team is extremely proud of Darin and this award. We thank Darin for his commitment and leadership, and we also thank our clients for enabling us to deliver high-quality, creatively effective design and visual communication since 1987.
Congratulations, Darin. You certainly deserve this honor.
To congratulate Darin yourself, you can send him an email or give him a call at 509.456-5576 x102.
Judging the Best of OKC
 |
| Rick judging entries or the Oklahoma City Advertising Federation ADDY Awards. |
|
In January 2006, Rick Hosmer, principal and creative director of Klundt Hosmer, was invited to Oklahoma City to judge the Oklahoma City Advertising Federation ADDY Awards.
Rick worked with four other creatives from agencies in Portland, Pittsburgh, Wichita, and Daytona Beach, to judge the best advertising and design that Oklahoma had to offer. As the 45th-largest market in the U.S., there were many great entries submitted and reviewing all of this work was inspiring as well as tiring.
After a very long weekend judging over 700 entries, Rick gained an even better appreciation of the work that is produced here in Spokane. Even though Spokane is a much smaller market, he felt that the print design, advertising, web site design, TV and radio spots produced here are as strong as anything he saw in Oklahoma.
The OKC Ad Federation hosts were very gracious, and gave the judges a true taste of Oklahoma. Highlights of Rick's visit included a great steak dinner (including "lamb fries") at one of the oldest establishments in OKC, and a sobering midnight tour of the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. |
A Fifth Year for First Night
 |
| Judy signing First Night 2006 posters at the unveiling event. |
For the fifth consecutive year, Klündt | Hosmer was proud to serve as the design sponsor of this ever growing Spokane event to ring in the New Year.
Judy Heggem-Davis, graphic designer at Klündt | Hosmer since 1997, brought wonderful color and energy to this year’s entry badge and poster. The design incorporated the theme of ice skating to promote the 2007 National Skating Championships to be held in Spokane.
At the event on New Year's Eve, Judy autographed posters for a growing collector-base eager to hang one more year on their walls. The night included musical performances, dancing, improv comedy, ice sculpturing, and an exhibit of prints and candle boxes from our good friend and very talented artist, Tim Lord.
Judy's design was featured on the Q-6 morning show, "Good Morning Spokane", and the illustration received a 2006 ADDY award from the Spokane Advertising Federation.
If you are interested in purchasing a First Night poster, or to get information on purchasing the entire poster collection, please call 509.456-5576 x107 and talk with Judy.
