Information & Education

By Rick Hosmer, Creative Director
Klündt | Hosmer

You might think that the main responsibility of a visual communications firm is to create effective design. While that's true, we have found that client education is a big part of the work we do at Klündt | Hosmer.

In order to serve as a better educational and informational resource for marketing directors, business owners and other corporate decision-makers, Klündt | Hosmer has assembled a collection of client resources to help you do your job and live your life better. This section contains articles, white papers, web site links, reprints, tools, calculators, and other features to make your day-to-day life easier.

If you have any suggestions for content in this section, send us an email. We hope you'll gain some insight, understanding and help from the information we post in Client Resources.

I.D. The International Design Magazine
This publication features news and articles on the latest in graphic, furniture, products, environment, and industrial design from around the world. Every issue is filled with examples of design that you would love to have in your home or office. Even the ads are cool. Have you seen the Monaca line of cedar-laminated products? Featured in the magazine, you can buy a knotty-cedar wood briefcase with leather handle for $230. This product and more can be seen at http://www.arenot.com The photos are great, but you had better be able to read Japanese.

The Standard
This gratis publication from Sappi is a great educational resource for print communications professionals. Each issue is focused on a different aspect of producing print materials. If you are a designer, you will love this publication. If you hire designers, you can read this to find out what they are thinking about. Pentagram designs the publication (so you know it looks good.) You can subscribe by calling Sappi Fine Printing Papers at 800.882.4332 or http://www.sappi.com

Press Check, Anyone?
Klündt | Hosmer designers have been going on press checks for over 20 years (at least the "old" ones have), and there is a definite art to it. Experience in knowing the limitations and capabilities of ink, paper, the printing press, and the press operator is required to not totally screw-up your project at the last minute.

Clients who are considering saving some money by going on their own press checks should check out this article from www.banta.com titled "Making of the Most of Your Press Check." The article is full of great advice for this very complex and often stressful procedure. If you think hickeys only come from making out, or gutter jumps are something that you have to do on a rainy day downtown, you need to read this article... or even better, hire a professional designer to conduct your press checks.

@issue
This "Journal of Business and Design" is published by the Corporate Design Foundation. It is an entertaining and educational piece featuring business design articles and visual communication commentaries. It's a freebee, too... so it is definitely worth ordering a subscription at 617.350.7097 or at http://www.cdf.org. Sappi Fine Printing Papers sponsors this publication, so the paper is nice and the printing is beautiful. Klündt | Hosmer has about 10 years of this publication on our shelves. It is a great resource for educating yourself (or others) about the value of corporate design.

Business 2.0
Not everybody is a designer, so if you are more interested in making money than "expressing your creativity", Business 2.0 is a great publication. The monthly magazine is one that I actually look through and even read when it comes in my mailbox each month. A survivor of the dot-com crash, Business 2.0 features timely business articles, ideas, and trendy, techie advice for entrepreneures. They also have a pretty good web site with a searchable archive of articles and other resources. Pretty cool.
