It's Time to Decipher QR Codes

Posted by Rick Hosmer on March 22 2011| 1 Comments

We've been researching and investigating the use of QR codes recently. If you aren't aware of what they are, you have probably still seen them. They are the square, digital-looking matrix blocks that are starting to show up in print ads, store tags and direct-mail pieces... and also on building facades and TV spots (see photo example.)

Klündt | Hosmer strives to maximize technology to enhance our client's customer communications and sales efforts. QR codes appear to be becoming more and more viable in the past 6 months or so, and we plan on including them in our design and communication offerings in 2011.

Here is some information that I found online relating to QR codes for corporate communications and sales:

• QR stands for “quick response”
• The  QR code matrix is easily read by most bar code scanning apps, using your smartphone’s camera as a reader
• QR codes can to link to a multitude of content options: mobile sites, video or music, instant downloads, contact forms, product info and reviews
• QR code scanning activity grew 1200% across North America over the latter half of 2010
• 30% - 40% of smart phone users have downloaded a bar code/QR scanning app

More people are upgrading their cell phones to smartphones and want to make the most of the technology and entertainment opportunities of their investstment. QR codes are a proven way to enhance the mobile delivery of information to people many businesses need to engage with the most.

Here's a look at how Best Buy implemented QR codes in 2010:

Last Fall, Best Buy reworked their product  tags to include QR codes. An Insight Express study titled "Get Ready for the Mobile Shopper", notes that 82% of shoppers have used their mobile phone while shopping. A perfect opportunity for Best Buy. No need to wait for a sales rep to answer your questions, or get online from home or the office to check out customer reviews, these shoppers are getting the information they want, when they want it... right at the point of sale.

Klündt | Hosmer is actively looking for a client to partner with on a QR code venture. If you're interested in finding out what this technology can do for your mobile communications and sales, give us a call.

  • I was recently at an art festival and all of the booths included QR codes that took you to the artist's websites or contact information. It was a quick and easy way to get info on your phone that you could access later. Good article. Thanks
